In the garden ‘neath the willow
Brief reflection on the window
Once unseen and twice unheard
and thrice is scorned their childlike word
Harken, our undying song

Secrets hoarded, never told
Eternal life, eternal old
Chained by pity, play in darkness
Neither moon nor sun nor laughter
We sing, we sing, but not for long

Wings of lattice beat in time
to spirit music lost of rhyme
Bare their bones and beauty-torn
Eyes not blind but dark, forlorn
Closed our minds, one certainty

Gently, like a feather falling
Memory of a cricket calling
Silence is the path they follow
Hills like skulls and dusty hollows
The dreams of children set us free

This fate foretold and chosen well
Enigmas they would never tell
Upon the streams their image faded
Cry, they cry for what they’ve traded
Set us free upon the world
May we behold our wings of pearl
Drink the glory that became us
And unto the earth reclaim us.

that is quite beautiful. i don’t understand the darkness/laughter rhyme though...was it supposed to rhyme?

:-) Megan Proverbs replies: "It’s the ’ah’ sound that’s supposed to rhyme, as in dark/laugh. There’s a word for it, assonance I think...

I am usually indifferent toward poetry, but something about this one caught and held my interest. It’s so sad. Perhaps that’s why I like it so much--you convey the power of that sadness so eloquently. Well done!
